Choosing pool location and orientation – how to make the right decision

Choosing pool location and orientation – how to make the right decision

Why is pool location selection so important?

Choosing the pool location is one of the most important decisions in the entire project. Mistakes at this stage cannot be easily corrected later, regardless of pool quality, equipment or finishing.

A good pool isn't just technically correct – it must be properly positioned in space, in harmony with sun, wind, surroundings and intended use.

Pool position directly affects:

  • water temperature and swimming season duration
  • amount of debris in the pool
  • energy consumption for heating
  • comfort of use
  • visual appearance of the yard
  • value of the entire property

Pool orientation toward the sun

The sun is a natural source of heat and light. Proper pool orientation can significantly extend the swimming season and reduce heating costs.

Basic rules

  • the pool should receive as much direct sunlight as possible during the day
  • ideal orientation has the pool sunny from late morning to evening
  • the longer side of the pool is often oriented east–west
Practical rule: If the pool is in shade all day – the water will always be cooler and less inviting for use.

Shadows – house, structures and trees

Shade is one of the most common problems with poorly positioned pools.

What to pay attention to

  • house shadow in afternoon hours
  • tall trees creating shade for most of the day
  • outbuildings, fences and walls

Besides cooling the water, trees bring additional problems:

  • leaves and pollen in the pool
  • root systems that can threaten installations
  • increased maintenance

Wind impact

Wind affects both comfort and pool maintenance:

  • cools the water surface
  • brings dust and debris
  • creates waves in smaller pools

Ideally, the pool should be:

  • protected from prevailing winds
  • positioned behind the house, hedge or natural barrier

Position in the yard and visual effect

The pool should be in a place that naturally fits the yard:

  • visible from the house (visual contact)
  • logical connection with terrace and house
  • not appearing "tucked away" or isolated

Privacy and comfort

A good pool position ensures:

  • protection from neighbors' view
  • peace and sense of privacy
  • possibility to arrange deck area, loungers and greenery
Golden rule: The best place for a pool is where you naturally spend time and where you enjoy being most – not the spot that "happens to be available".

Conclusion

Proper selection of pool location and orientation makes the difference between a pool used occasionally and a pool that becomes the central feature of the yard. Sun, shade, wind, privacy and aesthetics must be considered as a whole.
