Glossary

Definitions of key terms in the world of PP pools.

A

  • Algicide

Chemical agent for eliminating and preventing algae growth in pool water. Used preventively during the season or curatively when green water appears.

C

  • Chlorine

The most commonly used chemical agent for pool water disinfection. Available in granule, tablet or liquid form. Recommended concentration: 1–3 ppm.

D

  • Disinfection

Process of destroying bacteria, viruses and algae in pool water by chemical or physical methods. Chlorine or salt electrolysis are most commonly used.

F

  • Filtration

Physical process of removing solid impurities from water by passing it through a filter medium (sand, glass beads, diatomaceous earth). The foundation of a healthy pool.

H

  • Heat pump

Device that uses energy from the surrounding air to heat pool water. 3–5× more efficient than electric resistance heating. Ideal for PP pools in Serbian climate conditions.

P

  • pH value

Measure of water acidity or alkalinity on a scale of 0 to 14. Ideal value for a pool: 7.2–7.6. Low pH damages equipment; high pH reduces chlorine effectiveness.

  • Polypropylene (PP)

Thermoplastic polymer used to manufacture PP pools. Characterized by high chemical resistance, durability and excellent UV resistance when UV-stabilized.

S

  • Sand filter

Device using a layer of sand as a filter medium for mechanical water purification. Requires regular backwashing. The most popular filter type for residential pools.

  • Shock treatment

One-time application of a high dose of chlorine (3–5× normal) to eliminate algae, bacteria and chloramines. Pool should not be used for 24–48 hours after treatment.

  • Skimmer

Device built into the pool wall that collects debris (leaves, insects, oils) from the water surface. Key to water cleanliness and filter system efficiency.

W

  • Water circulation

Movement of water through the pump and filter system. Adequate circulation prevents stagnation, algae growth, and sediment accumulation.

  • Waterline

The pool zone at the boundary between water and air. Prone to accumulation of greasy deposits, algae and calcium scale. Requires regular cleaning with appropriate products.
