Pool covers for PP pools – summer, winter, thermal, roll systems

A cover for a PP (polypropylene) pool is not an accessory but a functional part of the system that affects water cleanliness, safety, energy consumption, and the length of the swimming season. The choice of cover depends on the pool's intended use, the periods of use, and the expected level of comfort.

Why is a cover important?

  • reduces evaporation and heat loss,

  • protects the water from dirt, leaves, and insects,

  • reduces chemical consumption,

  • improves safety,

  • makes pool maintenance easier.

Summer cover (solar / thermal sheet)

A summer cover floats directly on the water surface. Its primary role is to reduce evaporation and retain heat, with the additional effect of slightly warming the water using solar energy.

  • Advantages: low cost, significant energy savings, easy to handle.

  • Disadvantages: not a safety cover, limited service life.

Winter cover

A winter cover is used to protect the pool during the period when it is not in use. It prevents debris from entering and reduces the need for extensive cleaning in spring.

  • Advantages: protects the water and shell, lower costs when reopening the pool.

  • Disadvantages: not used during the swimming season.

Thermal cover

In practice, a thermal cover is often the same as a high-quality solar sheet, but with an emphasis on thermal performance. Its value becomes most apparent with heated pools.

  • Advantages: significantly reduces heat loss, shorter heating times.

  • Note: the greatest effect is achieved when the cover is used consistently.

Roller systems (manual and automatic)

Roller systems allow the cover to be wound up and stored with ease. They can be manual or motorised, positioned beside the pool or housed in a dedicated recess.

  • Advantages: speed and comfort of use, tidy appearance.

  • Disadvantages: higher cost compared to basic solutions.

Which cover is the best choice?

For most private PP pools, the optimal combination is a summer (thermal) cover during the season and a winter cover out of season. Roller systems further enhance comfort but are not essential for functionality.

Conclusion

A pool cover is one of the most cost-effective additions for a PP pool. The right choice reduces operating costs, extends the swimming season, and simplifies maintenance. Investment in a good cover pays for itself very quickly.
