Overflow channels – types and construction

Overflow channels are a key element of every overflow-type PP (polypropylene) pool. Their role is to collect excess water from the pool surface, maintain a constant water level, and enable the efficient removal of surface impurities. The quality of the design and construction of the overflow channel directly affects the functionality and aesthetics of the pool.

The primary function of an overflow channel

The overflow channel collects water that spills over the pool edge and directs it to the balance tank. In this way, surface impurities are continuously removed, and the water level remains stable regardless of the number of bathers.

Types of overflow channels

  • Open overflow channel – water is visible within the channel; most commonly used in luxury pools.

  • Grated overflow channel – the channel is covered with a grating, which is a practical and safe solution for private pools.

  • Concealed (slot) overflow – water spills through a narrow slot, emphasising a minimalist design aesthetic.

Materials and compatibility with PP pools

In PP pools, the overflow channel is most commonly constructed as an integral part of the PP shell or in combination with compatible PP components. This ensures complete watertightness and chemical resistance of the system.

Construction and falls

Correct falls within the channel ensure unobstructed water flow to the outlets. Improper construction can lead to water retention, the build-up of dirt, and unpleasant odours.

Overflow channels and pool structural integrity

Pool edges incorporating overflow channels must be additionally reinforced. Precise welding and quality ribs are essential to ensure the long-term stability of the edges.

Maintenance of overflow channels

Regular cleaning of channels and gratings prevents the accumulation of debris. In well-constructed PP channels, maintenance is straightforward and quick.

Conclusion

Overflow channels are not merely a technical detail — they are a key element of the functionality and design of an overflow PP pool. A correctly selected type and professional construction guarantee a stable water level, high hygiene standards, and a long service life for the pool.
